A Tattoo Artists take on Artificial Intelligence Part 1
Within the last decade AI or artificial intelligence, has experienced huge advancements. In the early 2000s we experienced AI within things like “clever bot” which is a very basic system made to simulate a real human chat room. We now see this same kind of technology but on an extremely advanced level within things like chat GPT and even social media with the likes of “Meta AI” within Instagram and Facebook and “my AI” in snapchat. While the adoption of AI has been wide spread, the impact is not well known and there is a huge amount of misinformation and misconceptions about it. As a tattoo artist and tattoo collector, I have strong opinions about AI and its usage within artistic spaces.
There are a few different branches of artificial intelligence. Logic, language and learning branches all cover a huge spectrum, however I will not be touching on those (I just don’t know enough about them). These all kinda cover things like advertising, search engines, and logistics within larger spaces. This of these like how you talk about buying a new pair of glasses and now you are seeing ads for zenni optical. The branches I want to chat about are generative AI, robotics and medical imaging.
A negative that comes from almost every branch of AI is the environmental impact. I once again do not know enough about this to speak on it at length but here’s the gist; training and running AI models can use a huge amount of energy and primarily fossil fuels. So where humanity was destined to continue using energy and creating tech products, AI has boosted the manufacturing of hardware including GPUs which use rare earth minerals that can lead to environmental damage from mining and use of toxic chemicals.
My personal opinions on this topic are rather strong. therefore i have decided to break this up. See the next part very soon!
